India’s sad Oscars status

As an avid lover of Indian films I get depressed every time  the Best Foreign Film nominees are announced at the Oscars and India is not represented. How come, I say, that the country that actually produces the largest number of movies, can’t get one single Oscar. Last nomination was 2001 for Lagaan. Okay,  it lost to No Man’s Land.  That was one powerhouse of a movie!  Up to date Italy holds the title with most Oscars, 13. France holds 12 titles. Spain and Japan each 4.  According to Wikipedia, India has produced  a total of 2961 films in 2009 alone, of it 1288 feature films but apparently not one that could hold up to Oscar standards?  That year, 2009,  Harishchandrachi Factory was submitted. I heard it was good but I haven’t seen it. It never made it to the theaters here where I live.

These are India’s nominations. And not one win:

1957  Mother India,   directed by  Mehboob Khan

1988 Saalam Bombay!   directed by Mira Nair

2001 Lagaan.  directed by Ashutosh Gowariker

Earth should have received a nomination in 1999. That was such a powerful movie.  When I look at these lists it occurs to me that A) India submits the wrong movies and B) The Academy’s got a blurred vision too.

I wonder what will be this year’s submission and who will come up with the first Oscar winner. How long will we have to wait??  Nu? Come on, India!!

Shaitan, Shor in the City, Delhi Belly…  Oh sorry, I think the official entry is already established: Adaminte Makan Abu (Abu, Son of Adam), Salim Ahamed was selected.

Haven’t seen it. Let’s wait and see.
