Life of Pi. awesome trailer

awesome doesn’t describe it.  It looks like another Ang Lee masterwork, magical.

The official trailer for Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi”. Starring Tobey Maguire, Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan. The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper’s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

in love with Deepika Padukone

I know I shouldn’t talk this way, being a woman and all. But I just can’t help myself.  Yesterday I went to see Cocktail, the new movie produced by and starring Saif Ali Khan and Wonder-Women Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty. All eyes were naturally on Penty, who made her Bollywood debut with this movie, an impressive one what’s more, but I couldn’t unglue my eyes from Deepika, who plays Veronica,  and who lives life in London’s fast lane camouflaging wounds from the past by acting out as a party queen, as the It-girl.

As Veronica, she is a tortured soul battling loss and abandonment issues and she hides a great deal of vulnerability under her contemporary, sleek fashionista appearance.  Audiences and critics were surprised that the hi-five feel-good movie morphed into melodram during the second half.  I wasn’t. I thought Deepika’s deeply-layered performance reflected already a storm to come. Not only did I love her character but she made me believe it.  Had Deepika been born roughly two millennia back in Greece or Rome they would have worshiped her as the goddess Artemis or respectively, Diana. Or at least she would have personified them in their amphi-theaters.

I was awe-struck when I saw her first in Om Shanti Om (2007) She showed such confidence and poise already in her Bollywood debut. Deepika puts meat into her roles!

Her performances shoot like arrows. Even in roles that show her vulnerability, she never wants to be pitied. And that’s her.  She can get angry, like any self-respecting goddess, she can charm you, seduce you, she can get hit by life, abandoned by her lovers, but she will not be submissive.  Not Deepika.  So I think she OWNED the movie, talking about Cocktail!

Diana Penty shows great promise and a real knack for acting.  She is doted with a gracious screen-presence and she reminded me a lot of this beautiful actress in Swades, Gayatri Joshi, who to fans’ dismay got married soon after the movie and vanished from the radar. Diana is exquisite, an elegant creature by all standards, but no match to Deepika whose acting skills keep you magnetized and breathless. Anyway, that’s just my five cents.

She could even pull it off making us believe her infatuation with boytoy Saif, who slowly starts lacking the sex appeal as a romantic hero, hmmm. Hrithik might have been better for that role..  but one thing is for sure, the actors seemed to be all very comfortable with each other, which is a strong point in the movie, the triangle story. Diana Penty though couldn’t pull off the falling in love part… hehe.  I didn’t buy it.

I really could relate to the rest of the story.. and I’ve seen more than one cases like these, where friendships are sacrificed for love. One of the hardest lessons to learn in life. Nothing hurts more and I thought that was somehow the more interesting part of the movie.  Again I could sympathize with Veronica, her disappointment and rage, pulling out all the stops to reverse the situation with “I’ll be anything you want me to be, just don’t leave me..FOR HER, Hello, my formerly best friend!!”

It also rings  true that we might go into a relationship thinking we are in control and it won’t mean much at first, but then we open ourselves up to love, gradually and unnoticeably,  and before we know it BANG! it backfires and MrWonderful-oh-so-fullofsh *t moves on to greener pastures. And for some reason they seem to gravitate towards our friends or sisters, as if the world didn’t have millions of other women to choose from…. Out of Laziness?  No, absolutely. Good movie. If you just start out in life, it’s an Education :-)

PS  WHO LOVED THE SHOES??

OMG, Deepika’s outfits? TO DIE FOR!!!

Music was good too.

love the pictures, love the blog. nobody could describe it better. if you have ever fallen insanely in love with a totally mad but genius guy or gurl you know how it feels to love India. All you can do is fall at their feet and say “I surrender! ” :-)

ilovethedangerindistance.

Out of all the places I have travelled to, India has been my favorite. Trying to explain the country to people that haven’t been is like explaining astrophysics to a 5 year old or social skills to Sheldon Cooper. Just impossible.

India is organized chaos to the absolute extreme. Regardless of whether you go north, south or somewhere in the middle you’ll be surrounded by people, cows and maddening traffic. The holy mantra written on the back of each vehicle is what keeps the system going: HORN PLEASE. Everyone seems to drive with one hand on the horn and the other on their mobile. The roads of India make up most of it’s soundtrack. A chaotic symphony of deep blasts, staccato honks, high-pitched beeps, Bollywood music booming from radios and verbal abuse being yelled at anyone and everyone on the roads. It’s as though Indians drive by sound, but many…

Amitabh Bachchan asked to carry Olympic torch

If anyone deserves this honor,  it’s Big B. He actually deserves a gold medal after everything he has been through in life!  You gotta love him.  He is my favorite living Bollywood legend.  Have you seen him swing his leg in Bol Bachchan? :-)

If they should ever make a Grandpa Barbie doll I hope they will model it after him.

good idea, btw…

Ek Tha Tiger Trouble

The fact that the movie could be based on a real life spy makes it even more interesting. But it could mean, godforbid, a DELAY?!!!  I am already so psyched about this movie and have been for a long time that the thought of having to wait is killing me!! Maybe I should relax. After watching Bollywood movies for seven years now I should know better. There has been always SOMETHING jeopardizing a major movie release. .. I can understand the family members wanting to read the script or see the movie first, but hey, even if it should be modeled after  Ravindra Kaushik, they could object to ANYTHING and they could be also CLUELESS… when family members claim to know specifics about an XYZ famous relative, it usually turns out they know NOTHING!  I know fathers who have been in wars, they never ever talk about those experiences! I know soldiers who worked on special missions. Even the family members know better than asking questions!! So, dear Kaushiks, get over it. Let the movie talk… :-)

Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger has landed in trouble. The nephew of real life spy Late Ravindra Kaushik, sent a legal notice to the producers of the movie saying that he wants to see the film before release, as according to him Salman’s character has a striking resemblance with Ravindra Kaushik…..Talking to a leading daily Vikram Vashishtha, nephew of Late Ravindra Kaushik said, “He (Ravindra Kaushik) was my maternal uncle who was with the Research Analysis Wing (RAW). Born on April 11, 1952 in Sriganganagar, he also did his graduation from there. He displayed his talent at national level dramatic meet in Lucknow, which was also witnessed by some officials of the intelligence wing (RAW). He was contacted and offered job for the secret intelligence in Pakistan

Later he was sent to Pakistan for the purpose.”

The promos of Ek Tha Tiger bear striking resemblance to Kaushik’s experiences in Pakistan and, therefore his family has sought legal help to have a look at the original script or view the film before it releases.

Relax, I’ll be back: Barun Sobti

this statement is probably coming out after his colleague, Shenaz, has communicated to the press that she fears for her life… we know fans can get crazy, but hey, girls! what’s all the excitement? he is a happily married guy.

Maybe Miss Treasurywala should put a little post on twitter asking for some strong and goodlooking volunteer bodyguards. I am sure there’ll be no shortage!

I am not getting any Indian channels so I know neither her nor Barun. A film could change that in a sec.  Main aur Mr. Right stars Shenaz Treasurywala and Barun Sobti and will be directed by Adeeb Rais. And it looks like this romantic comedy is going to be the filmi debut for Barun and Adeeb. Something to look forward to in 2013.

and here is a taste of lovable Barun which may explain all the bruhaha and why he is so popular:

I am receiving hate mail: Shenaz Treasurywala

‘Delhi Belly’ actress talks about why co-star and telly actor Barun Sobti’s female fans hate her

July 23, 2012
Mumbai
Sonali Joshi Pitale

While in the daytime Shenaz Treasurywala is working hard on the sets of her new film, helmed by Adeeb Rais, she spends her free time keeping a constant watch behind her back. Reason being that the VJ-turned-actress feels her life is in danger, thanks to her co-star Barun Sobti’s female fans.

Before Barun signed the film, there was strong buzz that he might leave his TV show to be free for the Bollywood project. The actor allegedly has a very big fan following and as a result his fans targeted Shenaz for venting their ire.

Shenaz says, “I have received hate mails from his crazy fans accusing me of taking Barun away from them! They are upset about him leaving his TV show. But in fact, he has not exited the show.”

The actress is now scared about her wellbeing. She says, “These girls are mad. They can go to any extend for Barun. They are madly in love with him and they hate me.”

While stating that Barun is a happily married man, she adds, “He is so sweet. In fact, I too want a guy for myself who will take care of me just like Barun does for his wife.”

Salman and Katrina, ok, wazzup?

Every self-respecting Bollywood fan has been following with  interest this volatile love story. I wouldn’t call it Romeo & Juliet, but it’s kind of obvious that even after they split the chemistry between these two superstars is still going. You just need to check out the trailer for Ek Tha Tiger to understand that we are a far cry from Ek Tha Katrina :-)

Salman has  subtle ways luring his formerly first lady back into his life. Maybe these two just needed some time off? Personally, I think they make a GREAT couple. Both have been half-heartily bouncing around checking out other options but for some reason they always come back together, amicably. There is something to be said about that…  Salman is really at a stage in life where he has achieved everything he has set out to do. Now it’s just a question of keeping body and mind healthy and happy. Health has been an issue for him lately and we just have to wonder if Katrina’s oxytocin levels have risen at the same rate as Salman’s health troubles… Boyfriends, ex as they may be, I always feel, are women’s field practice for kids. Taking care of them, nurturing them, feeling needed is our greatest joy. As long as they are grateful recipients we are all too happy  showering them with our maternal blissy side. It’s when they become demanding or complacent that the honeymoon ends.  Salman is a lucky S.O.B  to have roped his Katrina back into his life. Of course he is seasoned what concerns women and knows which cords to pull, but he is getting older and wiser. Katrina is still young but he offers a haven in these wild Bollywood waters. I don’t know what the astrologers say but I think these two could make it.

She may not be able to reform him, but he might do that just on his own accord. I hear he gave up smoking, boozing and that’s what I call a good first step into a woman’s heart :-) good breath and better judgement. We shall see how the saga continues post Ek Tha Tiger.

I somehow want to see a happy ending for this story, actually not an ending but a new beginning.

Ek Tha Tiger roars with stunts and top stunt-crew

India has come a long way what concerns credible action scenes. I used to laugh at action sequences that were accompanied by somewhat childish sound effects and I always felt bad for these poor gutsy stuntmen who took a beating and/or were thrown around sets. Let’s face it, they belong to Bollywood’s great many unsung heroes. I wonder sometimes what kind of health issues they have to face as they are getting older.  A-listers can afford good medical care, physio-therapy and the likes, but what about all the side-kicks who put their lives on line for a few bucks…. do you ever wonder? but that’s besides the point.

Lately the quality of action scenes in BW movies has gone ten notches up. Special effects are getting increasingly better and are much more sophisticated, which might take the edge of some of the more dangerous stunts.  Ding dong sound effects have been also pretty much abolished and are mostly used now in masala movies that cater to the 80s styles.

When it comes to action sequences in Bollywood movies now, I am not laughing ANYMORE.   I go….WOWWWW!

Salman Khan, who discovered in the last few years (after a couple of flops in the BW romance department)  that people prefer to see him as a macho hero, fighting, the more the better, with just a dash of romance (to get the ladies excited),  has honed his action skills in Wanted (2008), Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011) and Bodyguard (2011).

In better physical shape than ever (even if he has battled quite a few injuries!) Sallu has surprised us with lots of impressive action scenes and in Ek Tha Tiger, which hits the theaters next month, he will pull out all the stops.

Salman’s call to arms has brought together a whole team of stunt experts from camp Hollywood and Bollywood. Whether for scenes in hand-to-hand combat or for the various chase sequences he has recruited an elite stunt director from Hollywood: Conrad Palmisano from  Rambo, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour..nm0003886

Stunt coordinator is Markos Rounthwaite, who worked on the Bourne Ultimatum and Ironman.   nm0745775
Kabir Khan, Ek Tha Tiger’s director stated that  stuntmen and action crew were pulled together from  12 different countries. The action scenes were filmed across various continents:  India, Turkey, Iraq, Cuba and Ireland. He is confident that this movie will redefine the idea of action movies in Bollywood.

Kabir Khan wrote and directed  one of my favorite BW movies, Kabul Express (2006) and directed the movie New York (2009). He wrote the screenplay for Ek Tha Tiger and directed it.

Son of Sadaar

this romance slash drama [garam] masala flick lures us with the stellar cast of

Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Arjan Bajwa and Juhi Chawla.

Interestingly, the movie is originally a remake of a 1923 American silent movie starring Buster Keaten, called Our Hospitality, which was then the base for the Telegu movie Maryaada Ramanna.  well, how about that!  You never know where good ideas come from..

S.O.S is directed by Ashwani Dhir. cinematography Aseem Bajaj.  music by Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid Wajid

The screenplay is written by the prolific and talented Robin Bhatt, brother of Mahesh Bhatt, in collaboration with Ashwani Dhir.

Robin Bhatt looks and sounds to me like the more optimistic and solar counterpart of Mahesh..correct me if I am wrong. here is ( I think) an older interview with him.

x9z4ne_simon-singh-interviews-robin-bhatt_shortfilms

Robin Bhatt, Ajay Devgan and Ashwani Dhir and Aseem Bajaj work together like a well-oiled machine. So we can anticipate a highly professional production.

And I love Ajay in a turban. He should always wear it.
