Saif Ali Khan postscript

Postscript of the Saif/Iqbal Sharma saga:

If we followed the hundred press reports, by now we are all  pretty much informed about what went down there in the Wasabi restaurant in this game of “He said. He said” with the whole drama of allegations and arrest, broken nose and grandpa on the stairs……We have it in the news, on twitter.  It’s everywhere.  We will digest it just in time for the release of Agent Vinod.  The only alarm-raising flag in this whole matter is Iqbal Sharma’s NEIGHBOR, who claims THEY ARE FRIENDS!!!!   I hope the media will do their homework and uncover if this was indeed an Agent Vinod publicity stunt, in which case I will outright refuse to see the movie.

Just the other day, looking at Riteish’s wedding pictures I was thinking that they (meaning  the people with vested interests, including Riteish himself)  probably made this poor man MARRY  Genelia to promote Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, a film that will most likely tank anyway.  I know that sounds mean, but I wouldn’t be surprised A BIT!   Riteish states that “promoting the movie” will give him “a chance to spend time” with his bride… eh, I thought they did that for the last 10 years…

Rumors started circulating about Akshay Kumar’s ” marriage crisis” just before  Housefull 2 opens in April. Poor Akki got all infuriated. Probably it’s something planted to make him look more “bachelorish” again…  and spike females’ interest in the movie  (why there should be a connection, beats me, but it seems to be documented that availability factor of stars plays a role in marketing.  Are we really that deluded?  apparently, haha). Meanwhile it’s probably causing a ruckus in the family. And there is a kid involved!

Question is: what to believe anymore! are we all taken for a ride? are we all victims here of murky publicity stunts?

232919-8-66.html    every news bit seems to end with the phrase about the neighbor who claims these two are friends… but maybe just one journalist picks it up from the other to make things look juicier

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai 2

In general, I don’t like sequels and  to my great dismay  they have been FLOODING Bollywood and Hollywood alike.

The Krrrishs, the Dhooms, the Golmaals, and the Dons are progressing to #3,  Dostana2  (in the making) …  Murder 2.  And I could go on.  It’s tiring just to list them haha.   And now there will be Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2.

But this one I am anticipating it with greater enthusiasm because A)  it promises to be different and Milan Luthria did an outstanding job with the first one. B) it’s got Akshay Kumar, who I want to come back with a mighty BANG plus sabse khubsurat Shahid Kapoor  and C) I shouldn’t be so negative  considering I liked  the biblical Godfather 2 better than 1. So there is always hope to fall in love with a sequel.

If you haven’t seen OUIM then go and rent it or buy it.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 will be flamboyant, says Luthria

Director Milan Luthria says his much-anticipated sequel Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 will not follow any “gangster movie trend” as in his film the focus will be on flamboyance, drama and music.

“As far as gangster trends are concerned, I think we stand apart as our take on gangsters is very different. It’s more of a flamboyance, drama, music and dialogues. So it’s a different space and thankfully we are the only ones in that space,” Milan said here at an awards function.

The year began with hit gangster film Agneepath, and it will be followed by Zilla Ghaziabad and Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur.

Produced by Balaji Telefilms, the cast of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 so far includes Akshay Kumar, who will play underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Shahid Kapoor as Chhota Rajan.

Luthria says some more interesting names will join the cast.

“We are putting it together carefully. Some interesting casting is to happen, but we are taking our time. It’s a big film, an eagerly-anticipated sequel. Akshay is also as excited as all of us. (Composer) Pritam has started work. In a few weeks from now, we will be making all our final announcements.”

The director is currently basking in the success of The Dirty Picture.

Akshay Kumar to star in Prakash Jha movie? Sweet.

This is good news.  I’ve just re-watched a whole batch of old Akki movies and I am in the mood for more.   Prakash Jha  is all about political cinema, though, and that will put sex appeal on the backburner…  even if that seems quite impossible when you talk about Akki.  :-)  It will be a good change, on the other hand, since Akshay’s last few movies were a bit silly and didn’t do him  justice.  It’s time to hit the screen with a big caliber. Prakash Jha is just the right man for that.

Akshay Kumar bags Jiiva’s role

(Akshay Kumar bags Jiiva’s role)

The buzz is that Bollywood hunk Akshay Kumar has been roped in to play the lead role in the Hindi remake of K V Anand’s Ko.

The remake, reportedly titled Sathyagraha, is being directed by Prakash Jha, who is known for films with socio-political themes. Says a source close to the development, “Akshay has signed on Jha’s film. He will be playing the role essayed by Jiiva in the original. The unit is now trying to get the dates of top stars for the other crucial characters.”

We hear that the makers are keen to make the project a true multi-starrer and are thinking of casting only major Bollywood stars for it. “That is why even an actor like Prakash Raj, who was in the original, is not being considered for this film. Instead, they are trying for Nana Patekar, who is being pencilled in to play either Prakash Raj’s or Kota Sreenivasa Rao’s character in the original,” adds the source.

And it seems that Katrina (who worked with Jha on Rajneeti) or Kareena could play the leading lady that was essayed by Karthika in the original.

No heroes for Priyanka Chopra!

(Priyanka Chopra)

Here’s why films opposite the big guns – Akshay, SRK, Salman, Ajay, Aamir, Abhishek and Hrithik – are unlikely for the actress

At the rate she’s going, Priyanka Chopra may have few heroes left to work with. Those currently acting with her – Shahid Kapoor (in an untitled film), Hrithik Roshan (Krrish 3) and Ranbir Kapoor (Barfi) – won’t sign any films with her in the immediate future to avoid looking like a stale pair on screen. Other B-Town biggies have different problems with the actress. Here’s why some A-List stars may not work with PC.

AKSHAY KUMAR
Akshay and Priyanka have given many hits in the past, including Andaaz and Aitraaz. They were very close at one point, but ever since rumours of an affair broke out in 2004, Twinkle Khanna banned him from signing future films with her. Doesn’t look like the wifey is going to change her mind anytime soon.

SHAH RUKH KHAN
Once again, rumours of PC’s growing friendship with a star actor have upset his wife. So much so, that Gauri Khan has struck PC off her personal guestlist. Seems like it’s a matter of time before she’s struck off as SRK’s leading lady too. When Gauri’s friends have been told to avoid the actresss, there’s no way the husband will get the green signal to work with her!

SALMAN KHAN
When they first acted together in Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, the problem then was her proximity to the film’s other lead actor, Akshay Kumar. Later, Salman’s brother Sohail approached her to do a cameo in their home production Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, which she declined. Salman took this personally and swore never to work with her again.

AJAY DEVGN
The last time Devgn and PC worked together was in Blackmail (2005). They were paired together in Naam, but she walked out of the film after barely three days of shooting. Though PC cited date issues, the buzz was that she’d made those same dates available for one of Akki’s films. Naam still hasn’t seen the light of day, something Devgn is yet to forgive PC for or even forget.

ABHISHEK BACHCHAN
They were last seen in Dostana, but things soured between them post the release of the film. Both of them wanted to dance to the same popular track at an awards show. While PC had selected it first, when AB Jr wanted the same song, she got irritated. Eventually, she backed out of the event to show her displeasure.

SHAHID KAPOOR
Currently, both are working together in Kunal Kohli’s untitled film, but Shahid has decided not to do any more movies opposite his former flame. Things went sour after they broke up, as Shahid felt she was giving out negative stories about him to the press. At a recent ad shoot, they barely spoke to each other.

SAIF ALI KHAN
While the two officially don’t have any problems, Saif’s girlfriend Kareena Kapoor doesn’t like PC. And that is a problem.

HRITHIK ROSHAN
Krissh 3 could be their last film together. Hrithik’s wife Sussanne is very close to Gauri Khan, and the fact that PC wasn’t invited to the Agneepath success party at their home is a sign of things to come.

AAMIR KHAN
Priyanka hasn’t done a film with Aamir Khan yet. No one knows why, but if it was something that had to happen, it would’ve happened by now, no?

Who’s King in Bollywood?

Numero Uno. This is not an easy question to answer! Ever since I started watching Bollywood movies a few years back, I recall  this debate  going on, correction: Raging on! cuz nothing is taken lightly in India…  To the chagrin of  the stars and their entourages involved and to the amusement of audiences – like me, the heated debate of who is Nr.1  is a gladiator fight of gladiatorist proportions. We are in awe.  Let’s look at the contenders. Throughout the 80s 90s up to today this hard-fought for position has been held by a variety of stars:

Shah Rukh Khan  Some call him King.  Some call him dated.  Since his flamboyant debut in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,  he has been the frontrunner. Not just because of his movies, but the man is just Mr. Charisma Inc.  SRK has a long list of hits under his belt. He’s the desi equivalent of a Beatle in the 60s. When he’s in a generous mood he will come to the balcony of his home and wave to his fans. Yes, he is THAT big. and on top, the most charismatic of all the Indian actors. When he talks to people he will make steel melt, he’s so personable. His last movies were commercial successes but the throne is standing on slippery grounds. Personally, I couldn’t connect to any of his last five or six films. I wasn’t crazy about any but you can’t say that loud because he has millions of fans who will die for him and who will go on barricades. I think he needs not to worry. If #1 is passe, we’ll invent a new category for him.  (like they do at the Zee awards..) or we’ll just make him a Lifetime Hero.

Aamir Khan.  That doesn’t sit well with Aamir and no. they are not brothers. They are  frenemies, less fr more en.  He has made a few good movies.  His wife Kiran Rao is also someone to watch.  A powerful union.  Aamir pretends he doesn’t care if he is #1 or #2 but that’s bullshit.  I mean this man is box office gold and doesn’t need to worry about public placements. I loved him best in his older movies and my favorite is Earth!  He makes really good movies.  He is known as a perfectionist, so he takes his sweet time to get it right. People say he is shy. But he is not so shy when it comes to promote his movies! I am looking fwd to his next.

an older picture but he looks so sexy here :-)

Salman Khan, who has been called dead and history more than once ALWAYS bounces back. He has found the success formula with his heroes. But they are getting old. And so does he.  Whenever he reemerges with his big world embracing smile he holds firmly in his fist Box Office Numbers. They are on his side. For the time being. Salman is a party crasher as much as he is a honey-bee. I know lots of people who say he’s the one and only king. The best thing is, he believes it.  The beautiful thing about Salman is his eternal optimism.  It will keep him in the cradle of his all adoring fans.

Hrithik Roshan . I love the fact that he is back on the throne and people start putting him back into  a possible #1 position. Who would have thought after  Kites and Guzaarish? those movies could have easily been the nails for the fame coffin.  I was sure, he’d phoenix himself out of it.  I liked Kites, btw. couldn’t understand why it was demolished. I celebrate his return with his last two hits:  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Agneepath.  It feels like he has never left the stadium. Here, Hrithik, you earned the laurels! We’ll make you Kaiser.

There is hope then for Akshay Kumar‘s big come-back. I know it’s around the corner. His fans have never abandoned him. He has a steady footing. He is just such an adorable guy. It’s hard not to love him.  I wrote about him in a different post, so I  would  just reiterate which is boring.  Akshay dearest, I will always love you, adore you and watch all your movies.   for therapeutic reasons.  much cheaper than a shrink and less fattening than digging into a pot of chocolate icecream.  It must be the punjabi background  that fills him with irresistible flair and energy… Punjabis know how to celebrate!

this picture didn’t come bigger. but you are, in our hearts… :-)

Fact is, in India, you can be launched into the Nr.1 position with one single boxoffice success, and the movie can stink, the acting being rainbow high over the top. If it appeals to the masses and turns box office revenues into golden cows, you’ll be Nr. One.  But that’s not the only reason. Who is King in Bollywood depends largely on politics, not on movies.

Fans are politically divided and so are their opinions on their stars. Indian fans are not your regular star struck fans. They are MOLOTOV cocktails!!  just go to the Indian cinema board on Imdb and throw in a catch phrase, Aamir Khan is the best!  see what happens.

In my humble opinion, I am not Muslim, Hindu or Quarterback, all these stars will have to take a deep breath because YOUNGER ones will be tomorrow’s superstars. But maybe the whole concept is antiquated.  Maybe that era is already fading. Kids have shorter attention spans. They will not come in drones anymore  and wait for days to get a glimpse of their adored King XYZ. They won’t have time. The economy and making good money will keep them busy. Kingdoms are so yesterday.

Except the kingdom of  Amitabh Bachchan.

and let’s not get started on the Queens….

Akshay Kumar nostalgia

It’s a good thing that he has lined up a number of projects because I am waiting for his movies with an aching heart. Yes,  I love Akki to death. I don’t care if I don’t like some of the movies he is in.  Seeing him is just like a gush of fresh air.  He is my big Punjabi bwoy. He electrifies the screen with his charismatic smile and his energetic larger than life persona.  His eternal optimism jumps out of the screen, takes you by the hand and swirls you round and round. That’s why I need him to be omnipresentis in Bollywood.

Geez, I just created a new word No, I didn’t.  But you need to create a new word to describe Akshay Kumar. I think it’s his humanity, his humility that is so infectious, or is it that he reminds you of all these irresistible men who will always crack a joke on your behalf, refuse to become entirely adult, play with the kids at a party… this youthfulness, this joyfulness, the honesty that we love in children, all of that is preserved in Akki.

I watch and re-watch movies that wouldn’t have left a mark if it wasn’t for him. He always makes me feel better. He is my life’s viagra. It’s okay to say that, yes? :-)

Do yourself a favor and watch one of his movies when the horizon looks dark and you mull over daily challenges and nuisances and there is not a shred of energy left in you. That’s when you need to pick one of his movies:

if you need help which one to choose, go to the Indian Cinema Board… :-)

Cinema’s catwalk: Awards Season

Golden Globes (here without the condom)

Just as boring as your corporate Christmas party, but you gotta show, helas. Every self-respecting cinema lover will sit  annually through at least one of these painfully long praise the lord acceptance speeches to see if your favorite films got their moment in the sun. And not to be cynic, but we are genuinely happy for the winners, who stumble-rumble on stage, red cheeks, holding on to the new trophy, waving it through the air like a meat tenderizer on speed.

We are there to see what the stars are wearing, WHO shows up and who is MIA. Yesterday, Woody Allen was shining in absentia and Jennifer Aniston didn’t join the party,  the golden girl, not even as announcer.  Yes, we noticed. She was replaced by Reese.

It’s a long evening. A sacrifice we are willing  to make,  just like lambs that get slaughtered for the High Holidays.  Filmfare or IIFA is more fun than the Golden Globes, for who understands hindi.  Those who don’t understand hindi, don’t know these exist and if they do, probably wouldn’t be interested in their existence, unless they are Bollywood addicts like me or have invested money..  And I can tell you, they are missing out on a lot of fun!  Just think of the year Akshay did his Singh is King gig, let me see if I can find it..

oh okay it was at the IIFA, the International Indian Film Academy Awards in 2008.  The film was a flop at the box office  and Akki with his great sense of humor in his intro complains to his mom about it: (or maybe he complains about his last film that flopped? could someone be so kind to translate what he says..?)

NOW, THAT’S A PARTY!

…here is the second part, if you liked the first:

I beg thee, dear members of the Academy, the  Oscar’s, Golden Globes or Foreign Press, to invite Akshay Kumar one year!

So what did I take home yesterday at the Golden Globes? Ricky Gervais shouldn’t be invited anymore. Angelina’s lipstick was too red.  Jessica Lange was too cranky.  Older women should stay away from showing their bare backs, cuz the face-lift clashes with the wrinkle rear.  I don’t know if I am crazy about the movie that won best picture. I thought it was just an okay kinda movie.  I still didn’t watch A Separation. I was happy for The Artist team, joined by their dog.  I was glad when it was over.   And These were the proud winners and nominees:
