Saif Ali Khan: ham in a jam

” You talkin’ to me…..?”

Saif Ali Khan et al talking a bit too loud in a restaurant?  little bar-fight?  fist goes out, SNAP!  Little scandal before the movie release.  Hasn’t hurt anyone in the past.

Apparently Saif and his sweet group of friends misbehaved by having a good time and celebrating upcoming release of Agent Vinod over sushi and (probably)  sake.

To the “victim” I say, give the man a break!  Change table… And to Saif I want to say:  Be a gentleman, pay the man and his tribe his meal. Find a more quiet corner… Fists out? isn’t that a bit drastic for conflict resolution?  Arrest???   Holla…  could be right out of a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode…

But hey, Kareena, pay attention, yaar. Shahrukh’s waiter rule   [@iamsrk  Simple rule I read… A person who is nice to u, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person… he/she is the worlds biggest dipshit..just]      applies also to guys who can’t solve a lil situation with a fella patron without the use of  fists…

Come to think of it:  wouldn’t the whole thing  have been more fun and filmi if the sushi had been flying around the tables…

moral of the story: People always tend to underestimate the effect of sake….

and you thought you knew John Abraham…

One  can easily imagine him handling wild cats –  of the female kind –  but I bet you didn’t know this about him.  And I must say it endears him to me: He works for PETA?

A lot has changed in India in the last ten years.  There is a new awareness towards maltreatment of animals.  I have friends in Pune who took in and adopted stray dogs.  There is a much greater sensitivity palpable towards animals. I think it’s wonderful that John has been active in promoting and cultivating that awareness. Kudos to him! I must say it makes me see him in a different light.

John Abraham to shoot with real tigers, pythons

Many might not know about actor John Abraham’s attachment towards animals and the greenery, but the actor will be shooting with real tigers and pythons in for Mike Pandey’s docu-drama, Return of The Tiger.

John has been very close to animals hence, he works for PETA. Possibly following his love towards nature and animals, John has decided to do a film on wild animals to enlighten people to not to kill tigers. The documentary will show re-enactments of close encounters that Pandey has had with tigers and pythons while making other wildlife documentaries.

Talking to a leading daily, Pandey said that John is a conservationist and protector of animals, hence have dedicated 10 days every month until June to the initiative.

Socha Na Tha

Just the other day I was re-watching for the nth time Socha Na Tha (2005) where sweet Ayesha  proves that she can turn into a fiery feisty fighterIf you haven’t seen the movie and have never heard of Ayesha Takia,  this is the time!  She turned me instantaneously into a super-fan of hers. Of course it helps the movie that she has an amazing chemistry with another favorite actor of mine, Abhay Deol –my manpasand Deol of Bollywood’s Deol dynasty.

Not the most sophisticated teaser, and couldn’t find a  trailer,  but the movie rocks.  It’s a fresh take on an old theme:  Shaadi=Marriage and Sweet Love vs Arranged. A lot of the beauty of the Indian culture transpires in this  soft-hearted romcom, which makes you feel for the characters, caught between stones and hard rocks, where endearing  Indian core values are clashing with a more modern sense of empowerment of India’s gen Y.  We know how it will end but it comes with surprising twists and turns. Ayesha and Abhay play off each other with grace and lots of fire.

Well written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. Great fun to watch.

Who’s King in Bollywood?

Numero Uno. This is not an easy question to answer! Ever since I started watching Bollywood movies a few years back, I recall  this debate  going on, correction: Raging on! cuz nothing is taken lightly in India…  To the chagrin of  the stars and their entourages involved and to the amusement of audiences – like me, the heated debate of who is Nr.1  is a gladiator fight of gladiatorist proportions. We are in awe.  Let’s look at the contenders. Throughout the 80s 90s up to today this hard-fought for position has been held by a variety of stars:

Shah Rukh Khan  Some call him King.  Some call him dated.  Since his flamboyant debut in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,  he has been the frontrunner. Not just because of his movies, but the man is just Mr. Charisma Inc.  SRK has a long list of hits under his belt. He’s the desi equivalent of a Beatle in the 60s. When he’s in a generous mood he will come to the balcony of his home and wave to his fans. Yes, he is THAT big. and on top, the most charismatic of all the Indian actors. When he talks to people he will make steel melt, he’s so personable. His last movies were commercial successes but the throne is standing on slippery grounds. Personally, I couldn’t connect to any of his last five or six films. I wasn’t crazy about any but you can’t say that loud because he has millions of fans who will die for him and who will go on barricades. I think he needs not to worry. If #1 is passe, we’ll invent a new category for him.  (like they do at the Zee awards..) or we’ll just make him a Lifetime Hero.

Aamir Khan.  That doesn’t sit well with Aamir and no. they are not brothers. They are  frenemies, less fr more en.  He has made a few good movies.  His wife Kiran Rao is also someone to watch.  A powerful union.  Aamir pretends he doesn’t care if he is #1 or #2 but that’s bullshit.  I mean this man is box office gold and doesn’t need to worry about public placements. I loved him best in his older movies and my favorite is Earth!  He makes really good movies.  He is known as a perfectionist, so he takes his sweet time to get it right. People say he is shy. But he is not so shy when it comes to promote his movies! I am looking fwd to his next.

an older picture but he looks so sexy here :-)

Salman Khan, who has been called dead and history more than once ALWAYS bounces back. He has found the success formula with his heroes. But they are getting old. And so does he.  Whenever he reemerges with his big world embracing smile he holds firmly in his fist Box Office Numbers. They are on his side. For the time being. Salman is a party crasher as much as he is a honey-bee. I know lots of people who say he’s the one and only king. The best thing is, he believes it.  The beautiful thing about Salman is his eternal optimism.  It will keep him in the cradle of his all adoring fans.

Hrithik Roshan . I love the fact that he is back on the throne and people start putting him back into  a possible #1 position. Who would have thought after  Kites and Guzaarish? those movies could have easily been the nails for the fame coffin.  I was sure, he’d phoenix himself out of it.  I liked Kites, btw. couldn’t understand why it was demolished. I celebrate his return with his last two hits:  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Agneepath.  It feels like he has never left the stadium. Here, Hrithik, you earned the laurels! We’ll make you Kaiser.

There is hope then for Akshay Kumar‘s big come-back. I know it’s around the corner. His fans have never abandoned him. He has a steady footing. He is just such an adorable guy. It’s hard not to love him.  I wrote about him in a different post, so I  would  just reiterate which is boring.  Akshay dearest, I will always love you, adore you and watch all your movies.   for therapeutic reasons.  much cheaper than a shrink and less fattening than digging into a pot of chocolate icecream.  It must be the punjabi background  that fills him with irresistible flair and energy… Punjabis know how to celebrate!

this picture didn’t come bigger. but you are, in our hearts… :-)

Fact is, in India, you can be launched into the Nr.1 position with one single boxoffice success, and the movie can stink, the acting being rainbow high over the top. If it appeals to the masses and turns box office revenues into golden cows, you’ll be Nr. One.  But that’s not the only reason. Who is King in Bollywood depends largely on politics, not on movies.

Fans are politically divided and so are their opinions on their stars. Indian fans are not your regular star struck fans. They are MOLOTOV cocktails!!  just go to the Indian cinema board on Imdb and throw in a catch phrase, Aamir Khan is the best!  see what happens.

In my humble opinion, I am not Muslim, Hindu or Quarterback, all these stars will have to take a deep breath because YOUNGER ones will be tomorrow’s superstars. But maybe the whole concept is antiquated.  Maybe that era is already fading. Kids have shorter attention spans. They will not come in drones anymore  and wait for days to get a glimpse of their adored King XYZ. They won’t have time. The economy and making good money will keep them busy. Kingdoms are so yesterday.

Except the kingdom of  Amitabh Bachchan.

and let’s not get started on the Queens….

Konkoma Sen Sharma’s rainbow colors

Do you miss her?  I am very happy to know she is embracing the wonderful experience of motherhood and it’s the most important role in a woman’s life, but I feel deprived.

Konkona Sen Sharma  is  a divine actress.  She is born for the screen.  She has a range of emotions that is unmatched, a rainbow of emotions.  I like this picture because it displays her cattiness, her playfulness, she is teasing you. But she can also break your heart, at least make it stop for a few moments.

Born in 1979  smash into a filmi family,  daughter of the incredibly talented and accomplished  actress/ director /writer  Aparna Sen, who I deeply admire, Konkona didn’t have to look far for the best possibly intro. As a matter of fact, her mother directed and wrote some of her most memorable and intriguing roles, Mr and Mrs Iyer, her break-0ut role and 15 Park Ave.

She is married to the  versatile actor Ranvir Shorey.  It assures that acting will certainly stay in the family.  Look at the baby now, you’ll probably see it again in 18 years on screen..

Konkona played in some of my favorite movies, off-beat, or parallel cinema, as it has been labeled. Page 3, Traffic Signal, Mixed Doubles, Life in a Metro, Luck by Chance, The President is Coming… all films you should absolutely watch and it will change your view on what Bollywood is all about.

Her filmography is impressive and I wouldn’t be surprised at all  if she started writing and directing, following the footsteps of her mom.

Filmfare awards

Award season in India. First there were the Zee Awards, now Filmfare. I guess that would be the equivalent of Golden Globes and Oscar’s, but don’t take my word… and since India LOVES bestowing awards in general, India has countless film award shows. But I think these two are the most important ones. I am very happy. My favorite movie this year has won BIGTIME!  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.  You see the second guy there on the left? That’s Farhan Akthar. He is the brain behind the movie. He and his sister Zoya. Beautiful script, beautiful dialogue, beautiful cinematography, music,  and  SUCH  A GREAT CAST. Hey, Filmfare! You should add another category: Best ensemble.  You could tell what an amazing chemistry this cast had on set. It just transpired. Couldn’t help it but trickle down to us.. :-)  Another player in this movie that made it special was:  Spain.

If you haven’t seen it yet, go and do it now! :-)

I couldn’t be happier with the results.

want to get out of your engagement elegantly? call the Jodi Breakers

Jodi  means couple or partner. I guess somebody discovered a niche in this movie for a company of sorts that breaks up engagements?  So that sounds like a fun premise for a  Bollywood rom com.  And I am not going to miss this:

It helps to see a radiant Bipasha Basu lighting up the screen with her million dollar smile.  And personally, I love Madhavan. He’s the kind of guy you want around if an asteroid hits next door, or your basement floods. If you get stranded on a Pacific island and begin to panic, Madhavan will be the guy to calm you down. He’s so personable and also the last Bollywood hero with love handles. He’s not rushing to the gym to work on some six packs so he can become an action hero.  I LIKE THAT ABOUT HIM.  He’s real. He’s down to earth. He’s the kind of guy your mom wants you to marry.  The pink glasses in the trailer, let me tell ya, is the kinkiest thing he’s  done in film. And I bet it wasn’t his idea.

Here is his mini bio at a glance and you’ll know what i mean…..     bio

I loved him in two movies and they are both excellent so you should check them out:

When Tanu Weds Manu.   it was a huge hit and I am not surprised they’re working on a sequel…

and the amazing film  A Peck on the Cheek / Kannathil Muthamittal

Bipasha Basu, luckily for us,  fainted dissecting a rat when she went for a science degree and after a few detours ended up in Bollywood. Since then she has been gracing many BW movies.  I loved her in  Madhur Bhandarkar’s  film Corporate.  She is a hottie, but she can play anything from hot to cold.

No dibbs to bikini: Sonam Kapoor

Can we give the poor girl a break here?  why will people bother her about it? would you want to walk around in a bikini with a whole nation watching? I feel bad for these actresses who are made to strip down their clothes to a bare minimum so that guys come to see the movie.  I don’t think it’s necessary. We loved Juhi fully dressed, Kajol fully dressed, Rekha fully dressed.  This  new bikini mania in Bollywood is beyond me. The worst part is that girls like Sonam or Anushka Sharma (who has recently dropped a lot of weight, unfortunately) start feeling bad about themselves, and aren’t they most beautiful as is?  Kareena did herself a great disfavor when she gave into the bikini fad.  Sonam shouldn’t have to justify why she doesn’t want to wear a bikini.  I bet as we are speaking she is being approached by hordes of personal trainers  who will want to help her get over her “insecurities” and then the directors will push it, until  poor Sonam starts breaking down. Even if you have the perfect body, maybe you still choose to keep it under locks and in the family :-) how about that? That’s not an option?  So, I like the fact that Sonam stands strong. Not only on this issue, by the way. She is very outspoken and I like that about her.  I read that she was saying “Mausam”,  the movie Shahid Kapoor and her both star in, doesn’t appeal to the youth. And why shouldn’t she say that? It’s her opinion and I happen to agree with her. It’s a nice movie but definitely for a more mature audience, tad old-fashioned. And that’s okay, too. Pourquoi pas?

Being honest in interviews is a virtue. Sometimes you realize you need a lot of strength to stand by your words. They happen to backfire, to sensationalize, and all for sudden you stand amidst crowds of photographers and journalists who want to pin you down and keep harking away on the same issues. “is it true that you said..”

I want to tell her, Sonam don’t worry, carry on with your acting , with saying what’s on your mind. It’s refreshing.  Be comfortable with who you are. You are an exquisitely elegant dresser and you know what looks good on you. You are a Knock-Out, Gurl!  Don’t change.

Sonam Kapoor refuses to wear a bikini

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor, during the launch of Confessions of a Serial Dieter by Kalli Purie said that she will never wear a bikini on-screen since she is not confident of her body.Sonam Kapoor has admitted many a time on several occasions that she doesn’t have the best body in the industry. According to Sonam, she looks good only because of the clothes she puts on.

The 26-year-old actress, who is known for her sartorial choices, said that it’s the clothes which make her body look good as she is still a fat girl inside despite appearing thin. “I don’t have the best body… I have loose skin. I look good because of the clothes I wear. I choose my clothes very carefully, which make me look thin and perfectly fit my body,” Sonam told PTI.

Sonam Kapoor said that though she does a lot of exercise and maintains a strict diet regime, she sticks to certain types and colours of clothes. The actress, who had previously said she will be donning a bikini for the first time in an upcoming untitled project, however, said she will never wear a bikini on-screen as she is not confident about her body.

“I will never wear a bikini on-screen because I am not confident enough. I know that I will not look good. I am not comfortable in showing off my body. I may look thin but inside I am still a fat girl,” Sonam added. The Delhi 6 star, who was last seen in multi-starrer Players opposite Abhishek Bachchan, has battled weight issues before stepping into Bollywood.

“It’s because of my work I am determined to stay in shape. In my profession there is a constant demand to look good with people watching you all the time. It’s my job to look good as there are people investing money in me. It’s also that I love clothes a lot and I just want to fit into them and so I try and maintain my body.”

According to reports, socialite Parmeshwar Godrej is hosting the party for the 57-year-old iconic lady at her Mumbai residence. The guest list has been kept under wraps.

The phenomenal Salman Khan

Sallu, as they call him affectionately in India , is somewhat a relic of an era that is slowly fading out of focus and yet, at the same time represents Bollywood in its glittery, shiny glory.

In the same age group as the other two of the three King Khans (Sallu, Aamir & Srk), who have been ruling the screen for the last quarter century,  Sallu, has perhaps been the most controversial. His private life as flamboyant as his on-screen persona, he has been linked to scandal after scandal AND HE SURVIVED!  Ok, for a while he was pronounced dead, just about at the time when I started watching Bollywood movies, but then he came out with a huge BADABANG! and there he was again with a huge box office success WANTED in the role of Radhe, which put him right back on the throne..

Actually, he started slowly pushing Srk and Aamir out of the limelight, when he followed up in quick succession with three more movies

  MAIN AUR MRS KHANNA…

LONDON DREAMS

and VEER.

Even though quality seemed to be overridden momentarily by quantity, it didn’t take Sallu too long to do the math. Why did Wanted work and the others not so? Wanted had a hero pretty much resembling him, rough on the outside, soft on the inside. A manly man, who twists  laws and morals according to his own gusto and necessity, thus his character Chulbul Pandey was born, the  HUMANELY corrupt police officer in DABANGG. This movie turned into GOLD at the boxoffice and he bagged three awards, among others Best Film at the prestigous Filmfare awards.

The ride didn’t end there. Dabangg was soon followed by BODYGUARD and READY. And there is no stopping Sallu. DABANGG 2  is already baking in the oven. A true hero never stops for gas… Sallu is going strong and I can’t wait for his next big adventure.

Salman Khan is truly larger than life. He knows how to connect with the highly diversified audiences in India, equally loved by sophisticated urbanites  and farm-hands alike. In India he is considered by some a beloved folk hero, one  who might have his  mistakes but,  aren’t we all human…
